The Courage to Create: Operating A Business, Not Just Working A Job

Name: Pete Cerqua
Business: Strength, Nutrition, and Wellness Expert
Current Home: New York City

Some people spend many years preparing to be a personal trainer. They work to heighten their own fitness and agility levels, they earn degrees and certifications and licenses.

And then, they go to find a job. Perhaps they pursue employment working at a health club or resort, or maybe a teaching position in a school of some sort.

Pete Cerqua approached things differently. After he was ready to be a trainer, he didn’t go searching for a job – he started his own business. Today, he provides individual clients with personal fitness training and nutrition consultations, he writes books and speaks around the world on his areas of expertise, and he trains other trainers to do the same. He is one of New York City’s most in-demand health and fitness consultants, and a global health guru.

Austin: After you completed your training and education, you didn’t go looking for work in somebody else’s business – you started your own. Why?

Cerqua: It was the 1980’s. At that time, there seemed to be a need for private exercise studios (not gyms) in New York. So I decided to build a business with my goal being to open up a unique workout studio that had a program different from what everybody else was doing.

Austin: What steps would you recommend to somebody wanting to start their own exercise studio and training facility?

Cerqua: Start building your business by going to where your clients are – their homes, or perhaps their offices, if that is what they want. This approach doesn’t allow for the most efficient use of your time, right from the start, and the travel will cost time and money. But this approach also keeps your risks, and your overhead, quite low. After you have built up a good following you can explore the possibility of opening your own facility. Having a substantial following and client base, before you open the doors to your own place, will help minimize your financial risks and help to ensure success.

Austin: You’re an entrepreneur, and you know how hard one works when one owns their own business. How does the entrepreneur, who can hardly get enough sleep at night let alone find time to eat right and exercise properly, stay healthy?

Cerqua: It has to begin with proper diet and exercise. Start by taking something to help you sleep better, like, for example, 5HTP or Valerian Root (check with your doctor or Pharmacist if you are taking prescription medications). Then add fish oil. Fish oil is an anti inflammatory that combats the inflammation we accumulate from our stressed lives and poor diets. I take two capsules in the morning and two at night. Start slowly with these so your body can adjust. One a day for the first month is fine before you increase your dosage. My books spell-out effective ways to get the exercise one needs without huge time commitments. And anybody can email me directly if you would like recommendations for specific products at petecerqua@gmail.com
